Walnut Street Reconstruction Project Update November 6, 2023
All roadway, sidewalk and driveway paving work are complete. Mulching, loam and seeding are also complete. The Contractor will be setting the regulatory and advisory traffic signs sometime this month. Once this is complete, the message board display and the orange road construction signs will be removed. The Town will perform a follow-up of Walnut Street sometime after the winter in April/May 2024.
Please anticipate minor traffic delays during the construction hours between 7am-3pm. Police details will be present to help with vehicle and pedestrian traffic. Give yourself extra travel time or use alternative routes if possible while traveling in this area during the construction hours.
Walnut Street Reconstruction Project Update October 6, 2023
The final pavement course on the roadway is now complete. Sidewalk and driveway work will commence in the commercial areas beginning next week, from Cedar Street to the Newton Town line starting Monday, October 9th thru Thursday October 12th, weather permitting. The hours of work will take place from 7pm to 4am.

The intermediate pavement course has been laid and the roadway is now ready for the final pavement course. The final pavement course is expected to take 3 nights to complete, starting Tuesday, October 3rd thru Thursday, October 5th, weather permitting. The hours of work will take place overnight from 7:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.

Walnut Street roadway resurfacing work has been delayed this weekend due to the upcoming weather. This work will be rescheduled at a later date to be determined.
Walnut Street Reconstruction Project Update September 1, 2023
The Walnut Street Reconstruction project continues as we progress into September. We will make every effort to complete the project before the winter.
We are expecting the sidewalks in the residential section to be paved with a final paving course during the first week of September. Loam and seeding the disturbed areas in the residential areas will follow after the Labor Day holiday and is expected to take several days to complete. Work on the roadway structures in both the residential and commercial areas is also expected to take place after the holiday and should be completed before the final roadway paving course is laid.
We are anticipating the stress absorbing membrane interlayer to be laid out over the road on Saturday morning, September 16th, with a rain date September 23rd. Final roadway paving is expected to take two or three nights to complete starting Sunday, October 1st to October 2nd or 3rd, weather permitting. Line striping will follow several days thereafter. Final sidewalk paving and loam/seeding in the commercial area should take place after the roadway paving work is complete.
The daytime work hours are from 7am to 4pm Monday thru Fridays. Nighttime work hours will be from 8pm to 5am. Please anticipate sidewalk closures and traffic delays. Walnut Street Reconstruction Project Update August 2, 2023
After three straight weeks of night work installing curbing and sidewalk in the commercial district of Walnut Street, the Contractor has now switched over to daytime work. Over the next few weeks, the Contractor will be working to install concrete for the wheel chair ramps. Some of the driveway aprons and sidewalks will be paved and utility structures will be raised for final roadway paving. Final roadway paving will occur at night and is scheduled late this September or early October weather permitting.

Walnut Street Reconstruction Project Update July 3, 2023
The Contractor is presently working on the eastbound travel direction side excavating and removing soil and old driveway pavement. The existing sidewalk will be extended from Hunting Circle to Cedar Street. After July 4th, the Contractor will be installing the bituminous curbing between Whittier Road and Cedar Street intersection. This work is expected to be completed around July 7th.

Walnut Street Reconstruction Project Update June 8, 2023
The bituminous curbing between Whittier Road and Cedar Street and the granite curbing between Cedar Street and the Charles River on the westbound travel direction side have just been installed. The removal of the old pavement over the driveway aprons on this side of the roadway will begin next. Once the removal work is complete, the driveway aprons and sidewalks will be paved with a bituminous base course. Work on the wheelchair ramps should also begin in conjunction with the driveway apron and sidewalk work. The work is expected to last about 2 weeks before switching over to do the eastbound travel direction side.

Walnut Street Reconstruction Project Update May 18, 2023
The roadway milling and temporary pavement marking work was just completed last week. The Town’s Contractor, J.H. Lynch is now working on installing curbing, sidewalks and the ADA ramps which will take place most of the summer. The roadway surface is scheduled to be coated with a stress absorbing membrane interlayer (SAMI) and repave with a final top course in October, 2023.

The drainage work has been completed. The Contractor began the sidewalk and curbing work adjacent to the Warren Park and Washburn Road, but was required to temporally stop the work due to the winter moratorium.
The work will restart around April, 2023 when the winter moratorium expires. Please continue to use caution when traveling on Walnut Street.

The Walnut Street Reconstruction project is now in the 9th week. The Contractor is installing drainage structures between 62 and 80 Walnut Street. The work in this area is expected to take several weeks to complete.

The Walnut Street Reconstruction project is now in the 5th week and is progressing smoothly. The installation of the drainage structures between Fairbanks Avenue and Damien Road had just been completed. The Contractor is now installing drainage structures between Cedar Street and the Charles River and is expected to take several weeks to complete.

The Walnut Street Reconstruction project is now in the 3rd week and is progressing smoothly. The Contractor continues installing the drainage structures at the Fairbanks Avenue intersection. We are expecting the drainage work in this section of Walnut Street to be completed by the end of this week. Next week, the drainage work between Emerson Road and Damien Road is expected to start.

Walnut Street Project Update August 8, 2022
The Contractor is scheduled to start the Walnut Street Reconstruction project this week. The work expected to be perform will be:
- delivery of the precast concrete drainage structures and pipes to the site
- saw cutting the roadway pavement for the installation of drainage structures
- the removal of the large white oak tree in front of 275 Walnut Street
- tree trimming low hanging tree branches over the sidewalks
- setup erosion control and tree protection
The excavation work for the drainage installation will start on the following week and the work is expected to last till November, 2022. The work hours will be from 7am to 5pm Monday thru Fridays. The Reconstruction of Walnut Street Project will include limits of work from Washington Street to the Newton City line. The work to be accomplished as part of this project includes the following; milling, roadway paving, pavement markings, sidewalk reconstruction, curbing, ADA wheelchair ramps and drainage improvements. The work will be accomplished by J.H. Lynch & Sons, Inc.
Obstructions to traffic, parking, and other roadway functions may be affected by this project. The work is expected to begin on July 11th and will continue through the fall. It is our intent to minimize the disruption of your normal routines as best we can.
The Department of Public Works (DPW) hosted a virtual neighborhood meeting on Thursday, February 3, 2022 for the public to to learn about and share feedback on the upcoming proposed Walnut Street Roadway Improvement Project.
This feedback will be helpful to us as we finalize our plans so that we can bid the project in February and have bids in hand with firm project pricing for the upcoming Annual Town Meeting in March.
If the project is approved at Town Meeting, construction will begin this summer and is expected to last until November 2023 with a winter 2022/2023 moratorium. The project limits are from Washington Street, near Warren Park, through the Town limit at the Charles River.
