Wellesley Ave at Great Plain Ave Reconstruction Project

The project is now complete as the final paving, signage, lighting, landscaping and road markings were completed last year. No further work is expected on the rotary or within the project limits on Great Plain Avenue. The new pavement limit are under a road moratorium for five year period. Excavation work is not allowed unless in cases of emergency and approved by the Town Engineer.

Re-imagine a new Great Plain Avenue roundabout in Wellesley.

Reconstruction on the Wellesley Avenue at Great Plain Avenue reconstruction project began in late July 2020. Work on the roadway also includes the Rice Street intersection to Brook Street intersection, and Brook Street to the Fuller Brook Road intersection.

Project Update for June 2021

The project is substantially complete as all the final paving, signage, lighting, landscaping and road markings are finished.  The contractor will work through remaining punch list items, which may result in infrequent lane shifts under the control of a police detail.  However, no additional lane closures or detours are expected.

A warmer and dryer than expected month of May resulted in several areas of seed germination failure and the emergence of weeds in many locations.  Due to the town wide watering restrictions, repair of these areas are expected to be delayed until late summer or early fall, pending weather and water conditions.

Project Overview

A number of proposed improvements are included in the project which will realign Wellesley Avenue, Seaver Street and the Great Plain Avenue roundabout.

Granite curbing will be installed, along with hot mix asphalt sidewalks, cement concrete wheelchair ramps to meet current ADA standards, modifications to the roadway drainage system, cross walks, and new signs. The roadway improvements also include pavement milling and overlay, new pavement markings, bicycle lanes, and a street lights within the roundabout area.

A new sidewalk will be installed along Great Plain Avenue and Brook Street.

The work is being accomplished by J.H. Lynch & Sons, Inc. and their subcontractors, under the direction of the Town of Wellesley Department of Public Works.

The work will take place Monday through Friday between the hours of 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM. Police details will be onsite during the project to minimize impacts to traffic and other roadway functions. Two lane traffic will be maintained throughout the majority of the project, although, there may be lane shifts to provide ample construction area for the contractor to perform the work. Drivers should use alternative routes during the construction hours.
