Outage Reporting and Storm Safety
Our crews work around the clock, at times in difficult conditions, to investigate and restore your power as quickly and safely as possible.
** IF YOU LOSE POWER, PLEASE FIRST CHECK TO SEE IF YOUR NEIGHBORS HAVE POWER OR IF YOU HAVE POWER IN OTHER PARTS OF YOUR HOME (YOU MAY HAVE MORE SIMPLY BLOWN A FUSE OR TRIPPED A CIRCUIT BREAKER). **
In calendar year 2026, the WMLP is planning on implementing a new Outage Management System (OMS) to help us restore power more quickly and provide more timely information to customers during outages.
Report an Outage
CALL US AT 781-235-7600 TO REPORT YOUR OUTAGE. An answering service will take your call when our office is closed.
During a significant power outage event, we will experience high call volume. Therefore, please just BRIEFLY REPORT YOUR ADDRESS and the nature and likely cause of your outage (e.g., fallen tree, downed wire, blown transformer).
Preparing for a Storm
- If someone in your household relies on electric life support equipment, please complete and submit this form so we are aware of your situation and to the extent possible, prioritize restoration of your service. Please also consult with your medical equipment suppliers about a backup plan/power. Should you experience a loss of power that creates an immediate, life-threatening medical emergency, call 911.
- Charge your cell phones and laptops (and power banks) and have flashlights with fresh batteries, medical supplies and prescriptions, and extra nonperishable food and water handy (for your pets too).
- If you have medication that requires refrigeration, check with your pharmacist for guidance on proper storage during an extended outage.
- Fill up your car's gas tank.
During an Outage
- If you don't have surge protectors, unplug sensitive appliances and electrical equipment such as TVs, computers, game consoles, and microwaves that could be damaged by temporary power surges while the power is out and being restored.
- Keep freezer and refrigerator doors closed.
- Stay well clear of downed lines, poles, and trees (at least 35 feet away). Assume that downed lines are live, dangerous, and deadly. The ground around a fallen power line may be energized and deadly. Downed trees may have hidden live wires wrapped inside of them. Call 911 if a downed wire is creating an emergency situation such as a fire or trapped person.
- Do not burn charcoal or use a gas stove or oven for heating - they give off dangerous fumes.
- Use a generator, if you have one, only outdoors and away from windows.
- Go to a community center/shelter or a friend or relative's home with power if you have medical needs or heat or cold is extreme.
After the Storm
- If power has been restored to your neighborhood but your home is still without power, call us at 781-235-7600.
- Continue to stay well clear of downed lines, poles, and trees (and anything that may be in contact with them such as fences, guardrails, or puddles of water). If you have to drive, watch out for them in the roadway and do not drive near or across them.
- Before re-entering storm damaged or flooded buildings or rooms, be sure all electric and gas services are turned off. Do not turn off or on power at your main electrical panel if you must stand in water to do so.
- Do not use water-damaged electrical equipment until a qualified electrician has inspected them and ensured they are safe.
- Plug in and turn on your electrical appliances and equipment one at a time to avoid a power surge or overloading circuits.
- Throw away any refrigerated food that was exposed to temperatures above 40 deg F for more than two hours or has an unusual odor, color, or texture. When in doubt, throw it out!
- Consult with your pharmacist or doctor about any medications that should have been refrigerated.
