[ARCHIVED] Take Precautions Against Mosquito Borne Diseases

mosquito image

Health officials are predicting an active year for mosquitoes.

These insects may carry diseases such as Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) or West Nile Virus (WNV). Recently a mosquito pool in Needham tested positive for West Nile Virus.

While Wellesley is currently at a low-risk level for mosquito borne illnesses, the Health Department is encouraging residents to take precautions to prevent mosquito bites when outdoors.

Recommended steps include:

  • Using an insect repellent with an EPA registered active ingredient such as DEET;
  • Limiting time outdoors at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active;
  •  Wearing long pants and long shirts whenever possible when venturing outdoors;
  •  Rescheduling activities planned for dawn or dusk to different times when mosquitoes are less active;
  • Avoiding areas known to have a high mosquito population;
  • Removing standing water from around your home.

For more information on mosquito borne diseases and tips to protect yourself, along with information about ticks and other insects, visit the Health Department website or call 781-235-0135.
