Three Wellelsey High School seniors with family ties to the military are receiving the 2020 War Memorial Scholarships.

Awarded annually by the Board of Selectmen, these scholarships are usually announced during Wellesley’s Memorial Day Observances, however that event was cancelled due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

The student recipients participated in the online Board of Selectmen meeting on Monday, June 1, where their achievements were recognized. “The Selectmen are honored to present these scholarships to three very deserving students and celebrate their accomplishments. We wish them the very best as they pursue their college careers,” said Board chair Marjorie Freiman.

The scholarships were awarded to seniors Xander Marcoux, Bridget Noonan, and Caroline Zimmer.

Xander Marcoux’s faith and call to service are two qualities he credits to his grandfathers, veterans of the Army and Navy. Inspired by his sense of patriotism and Marcoux_War Memorial 2020desire to give back, Xander hopes to join the National Guard and is also working to become an electrician’s assistant. He will be attending Liberty University.

She is a four-year, three-season varsity athlete recognized for her leadership and willingness to coach and mentor others. Bridget will attend Virginia Tech University where she will play Division 1 lacrosse.

She is an accomplished swimmer, religious education teacher and a gifted linguist, studying both French and German. Caroline will be attending McGill University in the fall.

The War Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by the Town of Wellesley in 1951 through special legislative action, to enable deserving students to pursue higher education. The scholarships are administered by the Wellesley Scholarship Foundation. Money is raised through the Town of Wellesley Boston Marathon invitational entry program, where two runners are selected each fall to run the Boston Marathon and fundraise for this fund.

Congratulations to Xander, Bridget, and Caroline.
