Residents who drive electric vehicles (EV) can save money and help reduce Wellesley's peak electric demand with the Bring Your Own Charger (BYOC) program.
The Wellesley Municipal Light Plant (WMLP) and the Sustainable Energy Committee (SEC) have partnered with Sagewell on this new program. BYOC encourages EV drivers to charge their vehicles during overnight hours in exchange for an $8 credit on their electric bill each month - an estimated 3,000 miles of free driving per year.
Overnight charging hours run from 10 p.m. until 12 noon the following day.
In addition, the BYOC program will:
- Extend EV battery life;
- Help keep Town-wide electric rates low by reducing demand during peak times; and
- Promote use of the cleanest, lowest-emitting electricity sources
The program offers residents the chance to make a difference in their carbon emissions while safeguarding the Town's electric infrastructure.
The WMLP is the fifth municipal electric department in the Commonwealth to launch the BYOC program. Wellesley is among the leaders in Massachusetts for EV adoption with more than 270 registered electric vehicles in Town.
