The Wellesley Municipal Light Plant (WMLP) is responding to inquiries from customers about higher than usual electric bills this winter.
In researching and investigating these questions, WMLP determined that temperatures this past winter were considerably colder than the past nine (9) winters.
As shown in the graph below, the average daily temperature in Wellesley for the period from December 2024 through February 2025 was 28.3°F, which was about 7°F colder than the past two winters (35.0°F and 35.5°F) and the coldest winter since the winter of 2014-2015 (24.7°F).

These colder temperatures likely led to an increased use of home heating systems, higher electric use, and higher bills, particularly for customers who have electric baseboard heat.
WMLP also looked into whether the recent deployment of new Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) electric meters may have contributed to higher electric bills and determined this is not the case.
While the new meters more accurately register electric usage than the old meters, the change is not significant enough to have contributed to the higher electric use and higher bills experienced by customers.
