One Billion Dollars. It’s a number that’s hard to imagine, but Jeanne McGrath disbursed that amount of money in her role as Payroll Specialist for the Town of Wellesley.
Jeanne, a self-professed “numbers” person, retired on May 4 after 47 and a-half years of service to the Town, first working in the Department of Public Works and then in the Finance Department.
Current and former colleagues, and friends joined a Zoom and in-person celebration on May 13 at Town Hall recognizing Jeanne for nearly a half-century of outstanding work. “She’s like the Post Office, reliably processing more than 2,470 weekly and biweekly payrolls, in all kinds of weather and circumstances to make sure everyone gets paid,” said Wellesley Executive Director Meghan Jop.
Hired in 1973, Jeanne has seen the Town through tremendous changes in both technology and staff. In addition to her payroll responsibilities for both Town and the School employees, she annually updated all employee benefit deductions, provided leadership and governance on the Wellesley Credit Union Board, and is known throughout Town Hall for her willingness to help wherever needed and for her delicious baked treats.
“Jeanne is a treasured member of the Financial Services team,” said Wellesley Finance Director and Chief Financial Officer Sheryl Strother, who read a signed resolution from the Select Board honoring Jeanne. “We never had to worry about payroll. Jeanne was always on top of it.” The Town recently hired Tricia Lamarre to take over Jeanne’s duties.
The retirement celebration included photos, a video tribute, and a handmade wooden chair with the Town of Wellesley seal that thrilled petite Jeanne. “A nice little chair that’s the perfect size for me,” she laughed.
Reflecting on her time in Wellesley and her decision to retire, Jeanne choked up a bit. “All of us working together make this Town a better place. It’s hard to leave after so many years.” To no one’s surprise, Jeanne’s last day was the end of a payroll period…and she processed her own last paycheck.
