The Wellesley Police Department will be offering a spring Citizen Police Academy starting on Wednesday, March 14, 2018 from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM. Classes will run weekly on Wednesday nights until May 16, 2018.
The Citizen Police Academy is an outstanding opportunity for the public to learn about how the Wellesley Police Department operates as an organization in Wellesley and as a law enforcement agency. Classes each week are different, with Wellesley Police Department academy instructors demonstrating a new and different aspect of the type of work that we do daily.
Subjects that are taught include:
Police Officer selection-How to become a police officer in Wellesley
Communications and the Wellesley Police Department Emergency 9-1-1 Center
Insider tour of the police station and communications center
Police equipment and training
Witness identification and interview/interrogation techniques
Community outreach, including bike patrol, elderly affairs, crime prevention and school resource officer
Traffic enforcement, including RADAR and LIDAR
Motor vehicle laws, including operating under the influence, breath tests and enforcement
Crime scene processing, evidence collection, and narcotics enforcement
Computer crimes, identity theft
WPD social media presence
Court proceedings
Mutual aid resources and Metro LEC participation (SWAT, Regional motorcycle and bicycle units)
Policing in Wellesley

All of the classes are taught by Wellesley Police officers, supervisors, and detectives. This is a chance to learn about the Wellesley Police Department and meet some of the many officers that protect the community on a daily basis. Graduates of the Citizen Police Academy are all entitled to conduct a ride along with a Wellesley Police Officer on the street.
