The Wellesley Police Department formally re-dedicated and unveiled the Wellesley Police Memorial with the name of Wellesley Police Officer Lamars Hughes on May 18, 2025. The ceremony was held for the family of Officer Hughes.
The Wellesley Police Memorial contains the names of those Wellesley Officers that died in the line of duty. Officer Hughes is the fourth Wellesley Police Officer that has died in the line of duty, having passed away on November 13, 2023, because of injuries he received in a cruiser crash earlier that year.
The ceremony and memorial re-dedication remembered and honored all of the Wellesley Police Officers who have died in the line of duty and whose names are engraved on the memorial. Department members read the names and stories of Wellesley Police Officer Thomas Shea, Officer Joseph Fitzsimmons, and Officer Stewart Savage as well.
Wellesley Police Officer Tim Barros spoke about Officer Hughes, his friendship, and his service to the community. The wife of Officer Hughes, as well as one of his children, also spoke about Lamars during the service.
Officer Tim Barros and the Hughes family then formally re-dedicated the Police Memorial in front of the Wellesley Police station with most of the department in attendance.
The Wellesley Police Memorial was initially dedicated 20 years ago in May of 2005.
