Water Service Line Inventory Project
Update!
The Town of Wellesley Water & Sewer Division is continuing its Service Line Inventory Project, a federally required effort under the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Lead and Copper Rule (LCR).
As part of this project, letters are being mailed this week to customers and property owners to inform them of the known or suspected material of their water service line.
Some letters are being sent directly to residents, while others are being sent to property owners or landlords for distribution to tenants.
Required Actions for Landlords and Property Managers

Why This Is Required
Federal and state drinking water regulations require water systems to verify that required notifications have been properly distributed to occupants. Returning this form helps the Town of Wellesley document compliance, update its Service Line Inventory, and avoid unnecessary follow-up.
Water Service Line Inventory Information:
As part of the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) Lead and Copper Rule Revisions (LCRR), water suppliers in Massachusetts are required to maintain a full inventory of drinking water service lines that make up their water system. This information will help towns identify service lines that may need replacement.
The Town of Wellesley has approximately 8,500 service lines. The Wellesley Water Department completed an initial review of its records in October and found that we have missing or partial records for approximately 6,000 residential and commercial properties. In the coming weeks, we will be reaching out to customers by mail to ask for help filling in the gaps in our inventory records.
It is important to note that the department believes that there are no lead service lines in Wellesley. The town has required the use of copper for service lines since 1962 and has been replacing lead service lines since the early 90’s. The water department has a robust lead and copper sampling program that shows a very low risk of lead exposure through drinking water in Wellesley.
How can you help?
Customers can help the department by visually inspecting the service line inside their homes, taking a photo and submitting that information for review. The short video linked below will help you identify the location and material of your service line.
A photo from your basement showing:
1. Your water service line - the pipe entering your building (Circled in the photo)
2. Your water meter(s) (Arrow pointing to meters in the photo)
In-Home visual inspections conducted by the Water Department will be offered free of charge to property owners if existing records indicate the possible presence of lead or galvanized service lines or in cases where information on service materials is incomplete.
To schedule an inspection of your service line please email dpw@wellesleyma.gov subject: Service Line Inspection. Please include your address and contact information and a member of our staff will reach out to you to make an appointment.
