At the June 18, 2025 meeting, the School Committee received and discussed the following presentations:
The Committee heard a presentation of the proposed new Unit E contract, representing the Department of Educational Technology, Technology Support Professionals. The administration reviewed the broad strokes of this agreement with the Committee in Executive Session on 6/10/25. The negotiations for this bargaining unit began almost two years ago. It is the first contract for this bargaining unit and it is a two year contract, retroactive to 7/1/2024.
The Committee heard a presentation by Dave Turcotte, Director of Human Resources, and Laura Saracino, Director of Performing Arts, on revisions to two job descriptions in Performing Arts. The first job description, Theater Technician, represents the restructuring of two existing positions. The proposed job title, Theater Technician, would be part of the stipend positions listed in all collective bargaining agreements. The goal is to hire at least two individuals to execute these job functions at WMS and WHS. This role will not involve teaching a course to students, so rather than have the work assigned as a Unit A position, the job functions will be more appropriately categorized as a stipended role available to all members of all bargaining units. The second job description, Accompanist, represents a revision of an existing role. The new job description indicates that Accompanists may be assigned to work in different buildings, and there are also some revisions that keep the structure of the document consistent with other Unit C job descriptions.
The Committee heard updates from Niki Ofenloch, Committee Vice Chair, on the Air Conditioning Feasibility Study. The scope of study was finalized and BLW will be the consultant. Work, expected to take 4-6 weeks, will commence this July, beginning with field investigations at the four schools. The update on initial findings is planned for late August.
The Committee heard a brief presentation on the Future of Pre-School Task Force Recommendations and possible next steps. The recommendations include: a new facility on the Upham site, exploration of a sliding scale tuition model, a potential schedule with additional, fee-based hours, and possibility of alternate bus drop off locations other than students’ homes.
The Committee heard and discussed the end of year composite summative Superintendent Evaluation. Linda Chow, Committee Chair, read the evaluation which she compiled from evaluations previously provided by each committee member. The Committee then approved a Superintendent merit increase and vacation day carryover.
The Committee then approved reorganization of the Committee. Beginning July 1, 2025, the officers will be: Chair, Niki Ofenloch; Vice Chair, Sharon Clarke; Secretary, Ilana Nissenbaum. Special thanks to outgoing Chair, Linda Chow, for leading the Committee this past year!
The Committee would like to recognize the tremendous efforts of all teachers, staff and administrators for a successful school year! The Committee wishes the WPS community and the Wellesley community a relaxing and restful summer!
