At the June 10, 2025 meeting, the School Committee received and discussed the following presentations:

The Committee heard a presentation by our Teaching and Learning Team of the WPS & World of Wellesley (WOW) Core Values K-5 Project recognitions.  The content of the projects are representations of the WPS and WOW core value Commitment to Community.  Congratulations to all recognized students!

The Committee heard a presentation from the Administration on recommendations from the Future of Preschool Task Force, which has been meeting for the past 18 months. The district is legally required to provide preschool for children, who qualify, at age 3 and up. The district is looking to build a facility that is reasonable (potentially as many as 14 classrooms, with additional space for student services and faculty needs) but leaves room for expansion. The social emotional learning needs of students is increasing rapidly and the current model with multiple site locations makes it difficult to staff appropriately to meet student needs, especially urgent needs. The preschool expansion/ new facility has been a placeholder on the capital plan for FY 2030, but the District would like to work with town partners to see if the process can be accelerated as the District has not been able to identify an interim solution. A new feasibility study will need to be conducted, most likely specific to the Upham site. The district is not planning for universal preschool.

The Committee heard a presentation by Dr. Kat Bernklow, Director of Student Services, Title X Coordinator and her team on the annual updates from Nursing and the School Wellness Committee Advisory Committee (SWAC).  Dr. Bernklow provided an overview on SWAC’s purpose which is to recommend, review and help implement school district policies addressing school nutrition, nutrition education, physical activity, social-emotional well-being and related issues that affect student health & wellness. SWAC will continue its focus on addressing topics related to: chronic absenteeism (support services, transportation, nutrition support, family-home engagement) by allocating resources and streamlining communication methods to school and community to ensure consistent support for students (and families) year-round and ongoing exploration of appropriate supports for students social-emotional learning needs.

The Committee approved the WMS Program of Studies for SY2025-2026 with updated language reflecting the approved competency determination language for high school graduation requirements. This item was presented to the Committee at its May 27th meeting. The Administration provided additional clarification on the WMS math pathways and the linkage to 9th grade math offerings.

The Committee then reviewed its work plan for SY2024-25. Committee members reviewed this year’s subcommittee, liaison, and task force priorities.

The Committee approved updated language for the School Committee Policy related to staff conduct (GBEB). The revised language was presented at the May 27th Committee meeting.

The Committee approved the non-union salary increases for FY2026. The projection for these increases was included in the WPS budget which was brought forward and approved by School Committee and by the town at Annual Town Meeting in April 2025.
