At the January 21 meeting, the School Committee received and discussed the following presentations:
The Committee heard an update on the Elementary Literacy Steering Committee work presented by Sandy Trach, Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning. The work of this committee will continue through the spring as it reviews additional literacy curricula and will make recommendations to the WPS K-5 literacy curriculum.
The Committee then heard an update to the FY’26 Budget Discussion given by Dr. David Lussier, WPS Superintendent, and Cynthia Mahr, WPS Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations. This update follows the presentation of the recommended budget by the Administration on December 10, two full days of Committee Budget working meetings on December 18 and 19, and the Public Hearing and Committee discussion at the January 21 Committee meeting. As a reminder, the full (searchable) budget is posted on the WPS website along with the December 10 slide deck. The Committee will be discussing the budget again on January 28 and plans to vote on the budget at that meeting.
The Committee heard a presentation from Cindy Mahr, WPS Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations, on proposed food service rates for FY’26.
The School Committee Policy Subcommittee brought forward policy updates related to the Bullying Policy Prevention and Intervention Plan (BPIP) and Policy KDB-The Public’s Right to Know.
The Committee approved changes to the Unit D JLMC salary tables and reduction in force language that had been developed in collaboration with the WEA. These changes were discussed at the Committee’s last meeting.
