FREE MENTAL HEALTH  FIRST AID TRAINING

The Wellesley Health Department is offering Mental Health First Aid training free of charge  on Tuesday, July 16th from 10am-3:00pm. This course gives people the tools to identify, understand and respond to someone who might be struggling with a mental health or substance use challenge — and connect them with appropriate support and resources when necessary.  One in five Americans has a mental illness, and unlike physical conditions, symptoms of mental health and substance use problems can be difficult to detect. Friends and family members may find it hard to know when and how to step in. As a result, those in need of mental health services often do not receive care until it is too late.

Just as CPR helps those without clinical training assist an individual having a heart attack, Mental Health First Aid prepares participants to interact with a person experiencing a mental health crisis. To learn more about Mental Health First Aid USA, visit MHFA.org.

New CDC Guidelines For COVID and Other Respiratory Viruses

Each year, respiratory viruses are responsible for millions of illnesses and thousands of hospitalizations and deaths in the United States. In addition to the virus that causes COVID-19, there are many other types of respiratory viruses, including flu and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). The good news is there are actions you can take to help protect yourself and others from health risks caused by respiratory viruses. Current MA guidelines remain in place although the Massachusetts Department of Public Health has indicated plans to adopt the new CDC guidelines soon.  Visit our website to see the new CDC guidelines and learn more.

Avian Flu Update

The Wellesley Health Department is closely monitoring the current outbreak of avian influenza (H5N1) which has affected dairy cattle in multiple states. Commercial milk products show evidence of the presence of the virus, but tests thus far have not revealed any live transmissible virus, and it is believed that the pasteurization process should be extremely effective at neutralizing the virus in milk and milk products. At this time the risk to the general public is considered LOW. There have only been 2 known cases of avian influenza in humans in the United States. Visit our website for more information and  ways to protect yourself and your family from avian influenza, including tips for people with backyard poulty/chickens.
