Dear Tolles Parsons Members,
On this date in 1896 – The first modern Olympic Games began in Athens, Greece. James B. Connolly of Boston, Massachusetts, won the first event and captured the hop, skip, and jump gold medal. Spyridon Louis of Greece won the marathon and became a national hero.
Food for thought:
Did you know that the very first published recipe for a PB&J sandwich was published by Julia Davis Chandler in 1901, but the sandwiches did not become a household staple until the 1930s when all the ingredients for the classic peanut butter and jelly sandwich were commercially available and inexpensive. During the Great Depression, the PB&J became popular as a high-nutrition, low-cost meal. Its popularity increased during World War II, as soldiers found them to be a nutritious and portable meal. The popularity of PB&J has remained steady ever since. Today, the average American eats 1,500 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches by age 18.

Our senior years give us the opportunity to reflect on the arc of our lives, and this often brings a heightened awareness of life’s spiritual dimension. When we define spirituality as a connection to something larger than the self, the spiritual dimension of life may include our relationship with God, our awareness of a universal force in our lives, or an effort to live in harmony with higher principles such as nature, beauty, community, or other cherished values. Whatever this may be, you’ve probably experienced it as a power beyond yourself that influences and gives greater meaning to your life. Through discussion, drawing, and writing exercises, we will explore the ways in which we have personally experienced that power in our lives, and we’ll work toward writing at least the beginning of a spiritual autobiography. The program consists of five, two-hour weekly sessions. Alan Bodnar, the workshop leader, is a retired clinical psychologist, a columnist for New England Psychologist and the author of the 2018 book Simply Human: Reflections on the Life We Share. He learned about spirit ual autobiography in a workshop with Dan Wakefield, the author of The Story of Your Life: Writing Your Spiritual Autobiography, and has adapted the technique for use with different audiences.Friday, April 10th
