The second Monday in October will now be commemorated as Indigenous Peoples Day in Wellesley.
At its meeting on April 5, 2021, the Select Board voted 4 to 1 in favor of a proclamation honoring Indigenous Peoples and ceasing to recognize Columbus Day.
The decision comes after more than two years of discussion in the community.
At Annual Town Meeting in June 2020, Town Meeting members voted in favor of Article 42, asking the Town to recognize Indigenous Peoples Day with a non-binding referendum question (Question #1) posed to voters in the 2021 Town election.
On March 2, 2021, Question #1 passed with 2,358 yes votes.
In accordance with the Select Board decision, references to Columbus Day will be replaced by Indigenous Peoples Day on all Town of Wellesley calendars.
