Walnut Street Reconstruction Project Update May 18, 2023
The roadway milling and temporary pavement marking work was just completed last week. The Town’s Contractor, J.H. Lynch is now working on installing curbing, sidewalks and the ADA ramps which will take place most of the summer. The roadway surface is scheduled to be coated with a stress absorbing membrane interlayer (SAMI) and repave with a final top course in October, 2023.
The work hours are from 7am to 5pm Monday thru Fridays. Please anticipate sidewalk closures and traffic delays. Police details will be present to help with vehicle and pedestrian traffic. Give yourself extra travel time or use alternative routes if possible while traveling in this area during the construction hours.

Roadway Milling on May 3 and May 4
Milling work is scheduled for Wednesday, May 3 and Thursday, May 4 between 8:00 PM and 5:00 AM. Work is subject to weather conditions. Any changes to this schedule will be posted here, on DPW social media platforms and through News and Announcements.
The work will take place on Walnut Street between Washington Street and the Newton city line. Police details will be on-site to help minimize impacts to traffic and other roadway functions. Detours and detour signs will be set up on Walnut Street and access to the roadway will be severely limited.

The Walnut Street Reconstruction project is anticipated to begin on April 18, 2023. The Contractor will continue where they left off last season installing granite curbing and reconstructing the sidewalks.
The work hours are from 7am to 5pm Monday thru Fridays. Please anticipate sidewalk closures and traffic delays. Police details will be present to help with vehicle and pedestrian traffic. Give yourself extra travel time or use alternative routes if possible while traveling in this area during the construction hours.

Over the course of the next few weeks, the contractor will begin Phase 2 of this project.
Walnut Street Project Update December 15, 2022
The drainage work has been completed. The Contractor began the sidewalk and curbing work adjacent to the Warren Park and Washburn Road, but was required to temporally stop the work due to the winter moratorium.
The work will restart around April, 2023 when the winter moratorium expires. Please continue to use caution when traveling on Walnut Street.
Walnut Street Project Update October 7, 2022
The Walnut Street Reconstruction project is now in the 9th week. The Contractor is installing drainage structures between 62 and 80 Walnut Street. The work in this area is expected to take several weeks to complete.
The work hours are from 7am to 5pm Monday thru Fridays. Please anticipate sidewalk closures and traffic delays. Police details will be present to help with vehicle and pedestrian traffic. Give yourself extra travel time or use alternative routes if possible while traveling in this area during the construction hours.

The Walnut Street Reconstruction project is now in the 5th week and is progressing smoothly. The installation of the drainage structures between Fairbanks Avenue and Damien Road had just been completed. The Contractor is now installing drainage structures between Cedar Street and the Charles River and is expected to take several weeks to complete.
The work hours are from 7am to 5pm Monday thru Fridays. Please anticipate sidewalk closures and traffic delays. Police details will be present to help with vehicle and pedestrian traffic. Give yourself extra travel time or use alternative routes if possible while traveling in this area during the construction hours.
Walnut Street Project Update August 22, 2022
The Walnut Street Reconstruction project is now in the 3rd week and is progressing smoothly. The Contractor continues installing the drainage structures at the Fairbanks Avenue intersection. We are expecting the drainage work in this section of Walnut Street to be completed by the end of this week. Next week, the drainage work between Emerson Road and Damien Road is expected to start.

Walnut Street Project Update August 8, 2022
The Contractor is scheduled to start the Walnut Street Reconstruction project this week. The work expected to be perform will be:
- delivery of the precast concrete drainage structures and pipes to the site
- saw cutting the roadway pavement for the installation of drainage structures
- the removal of the large white oak tree in front of 275 Walnut Street
- tree trimming low hanging tree branches over the sidewalks
- setup erosion control and tree protection
The excavation work for the drainage installation will start on the following week and the work is expected to last till November, 2022. The work hours will be from 7am to 5pm Monday thru Fridays. Please anticipate sidewalk closures and traffic delays. Police details will be present to help with vehicle and pedestrian traffic. Give yourself extra travel time or use alternative routes if possible while traveling in this area during the construction hours.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________The Reconstruction of Walnut Street Project will include limits of work from Washington Street to the Newton City line. The work to be accomplished as part of this project includes the following; milling, roadway paving, pavement markings, sidewalk reconstruction, curbing, ADA wheelchair ramps and drainage improvements. The work will be accomplished by J.H. Lynch & Sons, Inc.
Obstructions to traffic, parking, and other roadway functions may be affected by this project. The work is expected to begin on July 11th and will continue through the fall. It is our intent to minimize the disruption of your normal routines as best we can.
The Department of Public Works (DPW) hosted a virtual neighborhood meeting on Thursday, February 3, 2022 for the public to to learn about and share feedback on the upcoming proposed Walnut Street Roadway Improvement Project.
This feedback will be helpful to us as we finalize our plans so that we can bid the project in February and have bids in hand with firm project pricing for the upcoming Annual Town Meeting in March.
If the project is approved at Town Meeting, construction will begin this summer and is expected to last until November 2023 with a winter 2022/2023 moratorium. The project limits are from Washington Street, near Warren Park, through the Town limit at the Charles River.
