The 1998 Annual Town Meeting appropriated funds for the Planning Board to begin to develop a master plan for the Cedar Street area. Included in the study is a detailed land use study of the section of town extending along Route 9 from the Newton line to, and including, the Cedar Street intersection. The planning process involves public forums and a Steering Committee comprised of property owners, merchants and other lessees, residents, institutions and town officials. Public input is essential to the success of the plan, and will serve to shape future development, policies and actions to the needs and desires of the Cedar Street community.
Phase I of the Project, completed in February 1999, established a "vision statement" and set goals regarding land use, vehicular and pedestrian circulation, open space, design and landscaping, and economic vitality. Phase II, or the "action plan" is currently underway. The purpose of Phase II is to develop policies, plans and designs that will help achieve the goals of Phase I. Phase III, or the implementation phase, will begin in late 2001.
