Responsibilities within the Office of Fire Prevention can be divided into four main areas: Inspections, Plan review and permitting, Fire Safety Education, and Fire Investigations.
Public education is the most pressing responsibility of a pro-active fire prevention program. This office is responsible for presenting organized fire prevention and safety programs to grade schools on a continuing basis, as well as educational programs to other age groups. This office is also charged with developing additional programs to reach all sectors and ages of the community and to oversee the delivery of such programs. Requests from nursery schools, health care facilities, neighborhood groups, and private industry are accommodated to communicate the fire/safety message.
Documentation is kept on all USTs (underground storage tanks) installation and removals by law. The removals are witnessed by the Office of Fire Prevention to locate sources of contamination from leaking USTs. Any contamination is reported to the Division of Environmental Protection and the final disposition of the remedial action is coordinated with this office.
The Fire Prevention Office oversees the semi-annual inspection of all businesses throughout the town by fire company officers. All business and mercantile occupancies are inspected for safe housekeeping practices, current inspections of fire extinguishers, proper storage of combustible materials, emergency lighting, fire doors, and all other hazards to life and safety.
The Fire Prevention Office maintains contact between the educational institutions located in Wellesley to ensure high standards remain in fire/safety. Long range plans are discussed with the Fire Department on an on-going basis.
